i started a band
I believe God places people and opportunities in your life to be the bridge that crosses to the next chapter of your life. This was one of those bridges.
HOW IT STARTED:
In February 2024, I was asked to open a concert for Jordy Searcy at LSU. It was an event called Common Sounds that a ton of college students attend every year.
I knew that I didn’t want to preform by myself (as much as I love a good solo acoustic set).
That’s when I asked Daniel to help me put a band together for the show.
And that’s when Daniel asked Logan to play in the show with us.
And that’s when the beginnings of Free Therapy was born (even though we didn’t know that at the time).
A week before the show, we had our first practice, going over songs we wanted to sing, deciding what would be the vibe of our set, etc. Oh yea, and it was also the first time all of us were in the same room together and the first time we all really met and talked to each other.
I still don’t know really know how this happened but we started writing a song together? And that led to us writing “Sick of it All” in one night. The first night we all met each other. I think after we wrote the last line of the song, we all kinda looked at each other and knew that there was something special here.
March 7th, 2024
“Dear Diary, tonight I am opening for Jordy Searcy at common sounds! I even have a band with me this time: Daniel, Jules, and Logan. A week ago today was our first band practice and we wrote a full song and now playing it tonight. Movie moment. I’m very nervous about tonight but i think we will do just fine. But for real I’m so nervous.”
One week later, March 7th, 2024, and we were on stage as “Taylor Beth and the Boys,” playing the song we wrote a week earlier. Everyone was singing along and he energy in the room when we played our new song was indescribable.
All three of us felt it.
After the show, the three of us had the ultimate debrief session and decided that we should become an official band.
The night that “Taylor Beth and the Boys” became “Free Therapy” was probably about another week later. None of us really remember who came up with the band name, and we love it that way. We were all just spitting out random names, none which were good lol. And then all of sudden “Free Therapy” was the one that stuck. That was it. We were official.
I’ve always wondered what it would be like to have brothers. And now I don’t have to wonder anymore. I just can’t help but smile every time I see them both. To know that they were strangers that became some of my best friends in such a short amount of time is wild.
HOW IT’S GOING:
On September 20th, 2024 we released our first song. The song we wrote the first night we met. The song that started it all.
(Sometimes I wonder if we would have even started the band if we never would’ve written “Sick of it All” the night we met. I genuinely do not know.)
“Sick of it All” has been the anthem of our band, and we finally get to share it with the world.
To celebrate the song, we had a small release party at my house and a concert the next night!
All-nighters in the studio (i’m not exaggerating), songwriting sessions in my living room, conversations until 3am in the church parking lot, silly photoshoots, etc — have all led to what Free Therapy is:
A few college kids bonding over songwriting, broken hearts, and wanting to bring people together through good music — and therefore making genuine community that ultimately glorifies the Lord and the kingdom of God.
